I'm wrapping up 2011 with one last blog post. It's been a wonderful year for photography.

My focus is narrowing in 2012 to Lifestyle photography. I'll be booking shoots for maternity, babies, children, families, and couples/engagement. I'll be offering the same 3 basic packages - 30-minute mini shoot, 1-hour shoot, or a 2-hour shoot. Each package will also include the same great stuff; the photo shoot, retouched images on CD, and copyright release.

I have decided to cut wedding photography out of my focus for 2012, but might still book smaller, more intimate events if they pop up. If this is you and you are curious, shoot me an email and we'll chat!

On a personal note, my husband and I are expecting our first child in May; a little girl! Now that's exciting stuff! :) I will be booking from January-mid April and then again in July until the end of the year.

Mike & Katie's mountain wedding - October 2011

Ahh I love it. What else can I say? I was super excited about shooting a wedding in the mountains of NC in the midst of Fall to begin with. To add to the awesomeness, Mike & Katie both went to Muskingum (then College, now University) in Ohio when I was there, too, so that made shooting their wedding even better. The very BEST part of this, though, is how true-to-life the photo above is. Their wedding day was absolutely genuine and wonderful. It's such a joy to see people in love like this, starting their lives together as husband and wife and treating each other as if they've never known anything else. Congratulations to the two of you...we wish you the very best and look forward to seeing you the next time we're in Asheville!

Gorgeous couple, right?! I met Kathryn a year ago at the Farmer's Market. I was out with my camera taking candid shots and I asked her if she minded if I took one of her while she was picking out peaches. A year later and engaged, she emailed for a photo shoot and showed up with a bunch of props and good ideas! Thanks, guys, for spending a creative Saturday morning in front of the camera. Sometimes, I start a photo shoot just knowing that the whole hour or two spent behind the camera is going to be simply wonderful. Well, this Sunday morning photo shoot was saturated by warm, orange sun, a happy couple, and that feeling of just knowing how awesome the whole morning was going to be with them. I met Sam and Matt last Fall at a local tavern as a bunch of then-strangers got together to watch Ohio State football. I found out quickly that Matt is not such a fan, but he went with Sam out of love and support to watch the games :) I was so happy when I heard from Sam about their engagement. I was just as excited to take engagement photos for them! Thanks, to the two of you, and I wish you the very best in wedding planning, the big day, and your years ahead together. See you soon!

4 Hooves and a Sunset

We moved here a year ago and learned that Southern Pines is known for horses and Pinehurst for golf, but I don't think I entirely realized or appreciated how absolutely beautiful the horse farms are here. I got the chance tonight to spend a little while outside in the fields with Pam, Nathan, and the very beautiful Skip. There's something special about horses. You can just see it; something unspoken. It was a wonderful thing to photograph. At the end of the shoot, I drove off with quiet dust behind me and a certain serenity....and I could hardly wait to share these little moments on my blog :)

There are some people who are just naturally photogenic, and then there are some people who are naturally photogenic and genuinely sweet. I don't know this family personally, but spending just 30 minutes with them for a photo shoot was plenty of time to tell how wonderful they are! Hey, Parker! Bev and Adam met me down at a local park on Saturday a.m. for a gorgeous morning of 4-month photos for this little guy. A backdrop of early sun and the calmness of the lake was absolutely perfect. Parker had a lot to say as mom and dad talked to him from behind the camera...happy as ever!

What a beautiful family! I could hardly believe it was already time to do Maelyn's 3-month photos. Just as babies do, she has changed so much since our last shoot....staring at her toes, putting her hands in her mouth, and giving big smiles! I always write about how pleasant and wonderful the babies I photograph are and I'm truly not exaggerating, although you'd have to experience these little ones to believe it. A spur-of-the-moment photo shoot ended up being sooo wonderful in this crazy, busy week! I got a call on Wednesday for a Thursday evening shoot with these handsome little guys, Daniel and Matthew, and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to meet 'em and capture some moments. It's so fun to watch 18-month-olds interact, especially when they are twin brothers. I was impressed at how well they share, but I supposed that comes with the territory of being a twin :) Not a peep and lots of smiles... thanks for having me out to do photos of these little cuties!

I was so excited to hear from Kayla about booking a photo shoot, especially when she told me that the session had no further purpose than "just for fun." Celebrate marriage! Robin and Dave tied the knot on 5.14.11, which was a whirlwind of a wonderful day for both of them. I met this couple last Fall and have since been so excited about shooting their wedding! These 2 have a vibrant love for one another; seeing this in both of their nervous excitement before the ceremony was fun and all of those pre-wedding emotions turned into a smattering of beautiful moments once the vows were said and they had been pronounced Mr. & Mrs. They are identified by togetherness now, happy and whole!

Robin's Bridal Session

Back in March, I had a fabulous photo shoot with Robin and her daughter, Cheyenne. We went down to the Inn at the Bryant House in Aberdeen, got all dressed up, and did a bridal photo session a couple months before the big day...which was this weekend (5/14/11)! Barrett and baby Bryson!

Let me introduce you to my beautiful friend and soon-to-be new mommy, Barrett. I made my way up to Ohio last week to see everyone that I miss and love so very much and I squeezed in some QT with Bear once I got into town. What can I say? She looks great! It was the first time I got to see her live, in person, with her adorable belly...I couldn't help but think back to college days when this day, of marriage and starting a family, seemed so far away. Time creeps up and life only gets sweeter! I'm so glad to have shared a piece of my visit with Barrett and the rest of the girls in Ohio and loved taking just a few snapshots of Barrett and her belly :)

Are there words for things as beautiful as this? Babies are such blessings...from their teeny tiny toes to their beautifully curious senses about the new, bright world that surrounds them. Will and I were fortunate enough to have met a wonderful couple who were on the verge of being new parents earlier this Spring. I was so excited to capture some brand new Maelyn moments, so at just 9 days old we froze time for an afternoon to make memories to cherish of this precious little lady.

It wasn't that long ago that I saw Parker, but he still looks so grown up from our last visit! I imagine it'll feel like that every time I see him. His little feet stuck out of his pinstriped overalls on a hot April day for our photo shoot. His teeny tiny hands and big blue eyes explored colors and textures that surrounded him as we shot away the afternoon with this handsome little guy! So here he is - Parker, 1 month old :)

Wedding Day 4.9.11 - Jodie & Mitchell

Jodie and Mitchell...sweet, fun, true, happy. I don't know how else to describe these two! When I arrived at the Inn at the Bryant House for their wedding, Jodie was all smiles as she and Mitchell put the finishing touches on their outdoor setup before getting themselves dressed and ready for the ceremony. Everything there was DYI, from the cake to all of the hummingbird-themed decor - impressive! It was simply wonderful.

Yep - even the boquet was put together by the bride, herself.

Jodie's father walked his little girl through the gate from a hidden garden to her soon-to-be husband.

Happily wed!

This was one of my favorite parts...the toast - with milk! They thought it made more sense than drinking champagne with their wedding cake. Is that practical or what?!

Not only is the Bryant House an absolute perfect place for an intimate, outdoor wedding, but Jodie and Mitchell are now the Bryants, themselves! That made it even more fun (and necessary!) for them to get married there.

Just look at this happy little guy! Benjamin was all smiles with his mommy for an afternoon photo shoot at the park. He's bursting at the seems with personality. As Laura scooped him up, bounced him around, and showered him in hugs and kisses, it was totally evident that Ben has not a thing to worry about!

I Do - the rings

Yep. I've got it bad. Since the first date, I've been totally smitten. Will and I tied the knot last April and somehow every day gets better. Lucky is an understatement! So, in the slow of photography in January, I took advantage of one beautiful afternoon to capture some truly "us" shots of our rings. Will is an avid climber, so I asked him to fancy up a mechanism, of sorts, involving ropes and a carabiner for me to use in a few photos. Here are a few shots of what we ended up with!

About a month after our first date, I found myself rapelling 150 feet down a cold, December rock with stone-filled water at the bottom...needless to say, it took a lot of encouragement!

Here is a classic shot with the Bible. Timeless.

Ten years ago, who would've thought we could download the Bible on an e-reader?! We've got rings and scripture via our Nook in this shot.

another dog - meet Rocky

For the second blog post in a row, I have to share some off-topic photos of the cutest muts ever. Rocky belongs to friends of ours who received their first little bundle of joy this weekend (Congrats!!) and we kept him with us while they were experiencing their first days of parenthood. This boxer pup is probably the happiest thing I've ever met, with his whole-body wiggle at the slightest sign of attention or play. From soft wrinkles to furrowed frown, he's entirely lovable! Not to be confused with Roxy, the two of them were responding to everything double and mirrored commands - Rocky, sit. Roxy, come. It was mildly confusing for all of us!

Who could resist this face? As I was working diligently this a.m., I looked over to see these sleepy, big brown eyes just watching me. She's ridiculously cute.

Roxy was so annoyed with me after I took these photos that she got up and moved to another darker, quieter room to sleep. Such is the life of a spoiled dog.

Baby Bump - Kristen & Adam

A gorgeous mommy-to-be cradled Micah Adam as we braved the cold for some baby bump shots before the arrival of their little boy later this month. Kristen and Adam are such a sweet couple and their little guy has a lot of love waiting for him when he gets here!

We joked about Adam being the creepy guy in the background of this photo...I really love the end product! I think it speaks more "seriously ready for a baby" than it does anything else. These 2 are like models!

Beautiful belly - it's amazing how much this captures. All I can say is congratulations to Adam and Kristen. What a blessing.

Later in the day, Adam said an enthusiastic little something that stuck with the mood of their entire photo shoot - "Yep, it's going to be pretty awesome!"

Adam simply scooped up Kristen (and Micah) and walked easily across a field at Weymouth Woods. I mentioned "photography bliss" in a much older post from last year...well this was one of those moments!

Concrete Cameras

Last year when I started Lisa Anne Photography, my grandfather gave me 3 wonderful little photo machines. Just look at these old things! I call 'em "concrete cameras" because they feel far less fragile than my modern-day DSLR (and they don't weigh much less). They date back to the 40s and 50s, although I haven't been able to determine if the one on the far right was made around '32 or '48. Kodak made the Brownie models and at that time they were manufactured in the good old USA.

Each of these 3 cameras have a cute little handle on top. The viewfinder is actually right there next to the handle, so the photographer actually looks down instead of out to see what is in front of the camera.

This is the newest camera my grandpa gave me - made sometime within 1950-1961. It's also the smallest, yet the heaviest, of the three. It originally sold for just $3.50!

This is 5-year-old me in 1989 with yes, you guessed it, the same camera you see above! :)

These cameras need cleaned, I need to find film for them, and most importantly a place that will process and develop photos from these oldies. If you know anything about these models, I'd love to chat! The models are: Kodak Brownie Target six-20, Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Camera Flash Mode, and Ansco Shur Shot. Wedding Day - Mike & MaryKay on 1/1/11!

Mike and MaryKay rang in the new year with an intimate, elegant wedding at the charming Magnolia Inn in Pinehurst. Surrounded by ten guests, all children and grandchildren, the two of them gushed over one another after much anticipation and an emotional ceremony. Their love for each other felt so brand new, full of exactly what everyone wants for their wedding day - simple laughter, happy tears, and giddy excitement. The evening was supposed to conclude with a carriage ride, but ended in rain instead. In good spirit, isn't that good luck? They still processed out to rice-throwing and a makeshift evening of Taboo with family to conclude the big day. Congratulations to the two of you and may your years to come with one another bring happiness and comfort! I know your days ahead will be wonderful.

a Guy & a Guitar - Danny

My husband and I took a 10-day hiatus to Ohio for Christmas, spending 5 and 5 with each family while we were there. I'm always amazed at how much of a man my "little" brother, Danny, is when I see him (he's 23). My memories of us are consumed by outdoor forts, riding bikes, playing in the dirt, Nintendo, and sneaking extra popsicles whenever we got the chance. As a kid, everything he tried, he mastered. This new adult Danny is still one of the most awesomely talented people I've ever met. I was introduced to his developing guitar talent earlier last year and in December it was very apparent that he's certainly going somewhere with this. He rocked out so naturally to The White Stripes and Wolfmother, among others. He's had an ounce of formal training and the rest he has learned from listening. I asked, "How did you learn so much about guitars?" after discussing the physical difference between an acoustic and a bass. He replied, "I dont' know. I just pick it up every day." That, my friends, is a statement to be admired and remembered.

Christmas Magic - Lillie & Laila

Two little aprons on two little cuties on Christmas Eve - We had 7 girls in the kitchen with lots of prep to do for our family celebration on Dec. 24. Lillie and Laila are my cousin's daughters and were so excited about helping out with the traditionally large Italian spread - lasagna, antipasta, fresh mozzarella with tomatoes and basil, stuffed mushrooms, and crostini start the menu and it ends with enough dessert to feed an Army. The warmth of coming home to this every year is a complete highlight of our trip to Ohio from NC for me. The photos below were taken this afternoon and I am so excited to share them with you all. It's so much fun for me as a photographer to watch families interact, each responding to the other and falling into a natural role. Sanaa's first four months of life have been nurtured by a loving mother, aunt, and her helpful older brother, Edward. She spent the longest time just staring at him in awe as I snapped photos, reaching out for his hand and smiling slightly as he talked to her. Edward's smile is permanent and he's one of the friendliest kids I've met! He sat down next to me, grabbed my arm and flung it over his shoulder, and we were instant buddies. He even offered me a candy cane and one of his Christmas ornaments. He's such a kind little guy who has certainly established his role within the family! Graduation Day; a day to remember and a time to put endless nights of studying to rest. Kimberly graduated with a Master's in Accounting this semester and spent a little time in front of my camera with her family to capture some moments in her cap and gown. Her parents and aunt were just beaming, so proud of their favorite (and only) daughter and niece. The Boyd House at the Weymouth Center has such a historic "smart" feel, which made it the absolute perfect place for the shoot in celebration of educational achievement. Kimmy is such a gorgeous gal with the world in front of her, Master's degree in hand and a job awaiting in 2011. Calm, cool, and collected, she was so easy to capture in frames. Remember these pretty faces? Gia was my second happy baby to photograph last weekend (mentioned in a previous blog post). She's such a doll! It's her first Christmas and at almost one year old, this is going to be a fun one for Chris and Heather with their little girl. I was pumped to take more photos of them in front of their tree for the holidays (their first shoot was in October). Of all the toys in the house, Gia went for a spoon and a pot, so we worked with it! Chris even snuck in and set a box of cake mix next to her and, as you'll see below, it looks like Gia knows exactly what she's doing. Who needs real toys from Santa? Happy babies make the best subject matter. Luckily, last weekend I had not one but two laughing kids to photograph. Four-month-old Jack was one of them, and no wonder he's such a pleasant little guy - his parents are crazy about him! Calli and Zach had family photos taken with their first bundle of joy this year. I wish I could start this blog with an (ideally) sunshiny memory of the Aberdeen Christmas Parade on December 11, but I cannot. The weather quite literally "rained on our parade," but that didn't stop some determined locals who gathered along the streets to watch and yell "Merry Christmas!," cheering on the community parading through town. Colorful umbrellas added an unexpected dynamic to each float and there were still people singing and laughing as they endured, and maybe even embraced, the weather.

Tom and Teresa celebrate the Ohio State Buckeyes, just like my husband and I do, and it made me very happy to have a photo shoot with yet another couple who love scarlet and grey! They welcomed me into their home for a photo shoot and the 3 of us chatted up the afternoon while I was there with our little ties to Ohio and life now in North Carolina. After snapping some cold, quick shots outside, we came up with a way to showcase a framed holiday photo of Santa. The goal was, "let's not make it look like we're posing next to a picture." Dogs. They are just absolutely, positively wonderful. Jim and Lisa and "the kids," Dakota and Harley, have a special bond to one another and a tradition of holiday family pictures together. Dave, Jen, and their 3 children had me go out to their home for a photo shoot last weekend. I only spent a little piece of time with this family, but it only took that long to see that there is never a dull moment under their roof! As we walked out the back door for a few shots, chickens and a rooster were milling around. One dog followed us out and 2 more ran in and out of our path as we walked down even further toward the water, where ducks lingered and helped me out as the 5 of them laughed at "ugly duck" behind me while I was shooting their reflections in the water on the other side of the lake. It's always awesome to start shooting and see how much fun the people in front of the camera have together and to just know that this is probably a regular way of living for them. I truly saw what "young at heart" looks like when I took pictures for Glenn and Nancy. They are just fun. I caught them gazing at each other when the the other didn't even know it and laughing in the meantime. It's very often that I meet people in North Carolina who aren't from here. In fact, I would say 9 out of 10 (just my guess) people who live in this state can call themselves locals, but not natives. I met Joe and Carol shortly after moving to the Sandhills while out watching our beloved Ohio State Buckeyes when the college football season started. With their daughter and son-in-law visiting this month, it was a perfect time (with perfect weather) for a family photo shoot. My Favorite Veteran

Call me bias (and I should be). My husband, Will, is of course my favorite Soldier and Veteran and today we honor everyone who gives their selfless commitment to keeping our country safe and free. This morning, Will was so generous to say "okay" when I asked him to put on his ACUs and go out in our backyard for a mini photo shoot, despite it being a day that he typically wouldn't have had to tuck his pants into his boots and put on an Army face. As he knelt down in front of our flag for a few shots, I couldn't help but become flooded with emotion; I'm a lucky lady to be the one he comes home to. Thank you, Veterans, for your service.

On Sunday, I met up with Dave, Robin, and Cheyenne at the Campbell House in Southern Pines for a crisp Autumn afternoon of photos. I have been blessed, yet again, with subject matter that smiles! Cheyenne is 3 (she told me she had 2 birthdays last month - lucky girl!) and was such a natural in front of the camera. Between blowing bubbles and picking up leaves and pine straw, Cheyenne gave me so many happy faces to photograph. She looked a little at the camera and a lot at her mom behind me, adorably giggling. Dave and Robin are planning a wedding for next year, so some of Sunday's photos also capture this unique, special time during engagement for the two of them. Heather was one of the first people I met at work when I first moved to North Carolina. Wedding Day - Jen & Ian

Raleigh, NC was flooded with family and friends from New York when Jen and Ian tied the knot on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Jen was calm, cool, and collected (in true Jen style), just ready to be married. A few rooms away, Ian could not wait to see his bride. This couple is pretty non-traditional, so they found a space before the ceremony to meet up and see eachother and get all of their pictures done before the main event. From that moment, the two of them were completely wrapped up in one another for the rest of the day, both just so naturally ready to be husband and wife! With the rare occassion that out-of-town family and friends were all together, they savored every moment with them in celebration of their marriage. Jen and Ian had a short and sweet sunset ceremony lit by romantic hanging lanterns, followed by a relaxing cocktail hour and an exciting reception. The dance floor might have a few boards loose after this crowd! Congrats, you two. I wish you the very best!

A Mountain Town; Saluda, NC

Take 31 people and put them up in a big, old house circa 1880 and what do you get? No, not a reality show, but good guess :) The answer is a tradition that started years ago among friends in a quaint little mountain town called Saluda, NC. My husband and I spent the weekend with this great bunch of people and their next generations now being introduced to this getaway that they started in younger years. We were invited by a co-worker and his family to join the group. The Saluda Inn is unique in that it's not your typical B&B. It's a giant old place with a wine cellar in the basement. There is no kitchen staff or on-site entertainment except for what we created, ourselves. We were on a dinner rotation and had hallway-length bookshelves from floor to ceiling full of paperbacks, games, and old VHS movies. The house is far from empty; old pictures, at least two pianos, claw-foot bathtubs, worn out rugs, a record player, end tables in every corner and a wrap-around porch full of rocking chairs is only the beginning of what adorns the Inn. Guests aren't just guests; they are live-in residents for a piece of time. It's no wonder this group moves in together for a long weekend each year to live in this novel-esque place! With that, I'm switching gears today to share my weekend in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.

For two of the most hilarious, easygoing, and spontaneously fun people I know, I had the opportunity to capture some really sweet moments on camera for Deidre and Andrew. Malcolm Blue Festival 2010

The Malcolm Blue Craft and Farmskills Festival is held every September in Aberdeen, NC. It's a weekend of history; the farm, itself, dates back to the 1800's when it was first settled by Malcolm Blue, whose parents had emigrated from Scotland in the late 1700's. The plantation home still stands in its original spot and has been preserved to display what it was in its day (it's an 1825 farmhouse- just imagine!). The festival is full of historical representations, right down to Civil War reinactments and volunteers dressed in time period-specific clothing. It was a unique event for me to have the opportunity to shoot. I had a great time getting to know my new community a little better and capturing an amazing weekend in our town in frames! Tour de Moore 2010

The "Tour de Moore" bike ride kicked off at 8:30 am on Labor Day at the Campbell House in Southern Pines. Over 460 cyclists came from far and wide to participate in their choice of a 100, 50, or 28-mile ride in our Sandhills area. Habitat for Humanity is a sponsor of this annual event, which is where I fit in as a photographer. I was fortunate enough to volunteer with them for the day and capture some really great photos all throughout. Here are some pre-race moments, action shots, and post-race wind-down pictures. Farmers Market

The Farmer's Market in Southern Pines is like a movie scene; a grassy plot of land squared around by tented locals selling the juiciest peaches, sweetest honey, and most beautiful flowers, among other things native to this surreal piece of North Carolina. Bluegrass music is the backdrop to the morning, played live beneath one of the tents. Dogs roam with their owners, just as calmly as everyone else milling around at the Farmer's Market on a Saturday. Millstone Farm & Gardens, Cameron, NC - gorgeous work!

Kalawi Farm Peaches, Eagle Springs, NC

I learned from Sherri that "quick bread" includes pancakes, muffins, biscuits...pretty much any delicious carb! Her bread is, of course, included in that category.

Toole Farm Apiary - The only father/son master beekeepers in NC! They say that eating local honey when moving to a new place helps with allergies that could spin up. I'll give it a try!

Mackinac Island, MI - It's not too far off, yet feels like a million wonderful miles away! It was a gorgeous place for a wedding in June of 2009 for friends, Matt & Katie Sprinkle.

I took this photo for a friend of mine who was looking for pictures to accompany a book review that he was writing. "House of Cards" was a unique and fun challenge for me to not only shoot, but build beforehand!

Andrea and Barry planned an engagement party, but once their closest friends and family arrived, Barry announced that the engagement had been called off. At that moment, a gorgeous, giddy bride was escorted down a brick, outdoor aisleway toward her soon-to-be husband. After spending a weekend in Columbus, Ohio with friends for dinner dates, fireworks, and a beautiful wedding on the 3rd, I headed north to visit family for a day. My grandmother turned 80 on the 4th and my God-daughter and her little sis couldn't have had more fun jumping and playing at our cake and ice cream celebration! Inspired by my journey through older photography files, I'm taking this blog post back to last year. I had so many wonderful experiences with friends, family, and first-time (and return!) clients in 2009 that I wanted to dedicate a page to them today. Here's to you!

Kate and David... dear friends of mine! This was my first shoot of 2009 and it was in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, NC. This year, I got to travel to Key Largo to photograph their gorgeous wedding!

LaToyla and Sean...married in September 2009 in Raleigh. Their wedding was one of the most fun weddings I've shot, surrounded by real-life, kind-hearted people!

Tim, Tonja, and Josh... wonderful neighbors in North Carolina, great family! Their shoot was in December 2009 and this is one of my favorite moments of our photography morning.

Laila! This is my cousin's daughter and she's just adorable! She was so good in front of the camera, especially with the help of her big sister, Lillie.

This little gal was great in front of the camera, too! She was ready to pose and had a ton of fun at our shoot. She smiled and laughed so much with her mom during this mother-daughter shoot last summer. This is one of my all-time favorite photos.

Twins...too cute! I'm sure these boys have grown up like crazy since this was taken in May of 2009. They were all about figuring things out together. This shoot provided a wealth of opportunity to capture the most candid of moments.

Saturday Siblings

This shoot was even better than anticipated with three beautiful siblings! We took a (hot) North Carolina Saturday morning to shoot a few sister-brother-sister photos at a local park. We not only survived the heat, but had a little fun in the meantime.
